How Do You Know What To Do?

There are so many actions to take in life, and you can never fully predict what consequences those actions will lead to.

I have felt recently (the past year or so) that I have been drifting somewhat...stumbling into actions rather than driven towards them.

I had a great conversation with Lovah last week in which she expressed - incredibly powerfully - a vision of how she wants the world to look at the end of her life. That conversation and vision has spurred me to formulate what means the most to me and to create a combination Mission / Artist Statement.

My hope is that this is something that can drive me towards, and steer me.

I would love to hear what you think.

Artist Statement & Mission.

I will use my writing skills to…
  • Make the arts popular & populist entertainment that is financially and intellectually accessible and exciting to more persons and communities
  • De-stigmatize mental illness and advocate for improved mental health for all people and at all levels
  • Bring awareness and urgency to environmental issues, as well as advocating necessary solutions
  • Advocate and act as an ally for the civil rights of all persons, with focus on Women, Persons of Color, Trans persons, and the Poor.

Projects:
I will only engage myself with projects that build towards one or more of the above.
I will progress using a wide range of projects: plays, screenplays, articles and essays, and books. Also volunteering, donating, and general awareness-raising of these issues.

Before I take on any project I will ask myself how can it be used to further one or more of these goals. If it cannot, I won't do it.

Lastly, if something is not a “Hell Yeah!” then it is a no.

All projects and efforts will bleed with the values of:
  • Joy
  • Silliness
  • Optimism
  • Beauty
  • Pacifism
  • Intellectual rigor and Emotional Openness
  • Mutual respect and collaboration for all beings
  • Engaging through positive solutions rather than negative grievances.

By the end of my life:
  • The arts and theatre will be more accessible to all and more engaged with all communities.
  • The world community will be moving in a direction that is healthier for the earth.
  • The lives of those with mental illnesses will be improved, with more resources and support, less stigma.
  • All persons will have stronger and more respected legal rights than they currently do.
